Friday October 3, 2008 Win 7-2 vs Munyacks on big field

Usually a fiery encounter, the Krew came out with all guns firing and never looked like they were missing their leading goal scorer this season. Both teams appeared to be a player short until just prior to kick-off. Last minute arrival Dylmah scrambled a goal in early on to brush aside any rumours circulating the European duo back in their first game together. Some sloppy defending allowed Munyacks back into the game before Jase put on his shooting boots midway through the first half to fire in a hatrick before halftime. The Krew dominated the whole game and kept their opposition quiet for the remainder of the game. Al scored a late double and set up Pov to win by a comfortable margin. With this win, the Krew finishes top of the table and are clear favourites going into next week's semi finals.

Win 10-0 vs Inter on big field

This week saw the return of Sun Jihai from a stint in Europe with his partner. Unfortunately the honeymoon is officially over and Dylmah did not come to the game citing relationship problems with Sun, who stated emphatically that he will be seeking a divorce.

The Krew got out to a great start scoring early and often. Noid and Damo both saw chances go begging ang the opposing keeper played well despite the scoreline. Chemistry issues did occur with Al finding his way back into the lineup, which should be cleared up with a weeks more training. Despite some cheap shots from the opposition the Krew thoroughly outclassed the opposition.

The comeback of the Krew's answer to Maradonna, John Kim, was postponed one week. Fats was double booked, having an appointment with a hot dog, some cocaine and a couple of Argentinian co-eds.

Win 8-2 vs Randoms (2) on the big field.

After last weeks physical encounter, the Krew was happy to get back to a fast paced, free flowing, phoenix suns style offensive game.

Damo showed up late, having only been cleared by the medical staff moments before the game due to complications from the previous weeks head injury. The Krew was however fortunate to have Paul in goals, temporarily replacing Tony "Vukovic" Tran who was serving a suspension for assaulting a match official.

The Krew fell to an early goal, with Paul being decidedly rusty in the games opening stages. He did however recover to have a fantastic game. The Krew quickly countered with two goals and pressured the opposing team into an own goal. It would prove to be an insurmountable lead and the second half saw the Krew looking to improve an already stellar goal differential.

Injury report
Jase and Honga received some bumps and bruises from the clumsy defence. A saturday recovery session in the local spa has been scheduled for both players, who also agreed to give each other an after spa massage.

The honeymooners will be returning shortly, yet the manager has made no decision on whether they will be placed back in the first squad or will have to play their way back in due to the current stellar form. Other options are for them to get seasoning in the Carling Cup side.

The Krew suckered some guys into keeping for us and failed to secure all the points for the first time since the lovebirds went on their honeymoon to Europe.

Goals went to Noid and Pov.

Honga was absent due to a chronic condition (being a ghey roosters supporter).

Other players were Jase and Damo, who came to blows in the second half resulting in an injury to Damo. A fractured orbital bone was suspected, but X-Rays were negative.

The Krew took another step in returning to full strength when Noid returned in goal, but Al was unavailable. Both Noid and Mainland's respective injuries had not fully recovered. The game was all but over when Noid and Pov were sent off for some awful gaffer decisions.

Playing on the small field, the Krew's defence was asleep with Con and Pov conceding two early goals. A consistent problem was the lack of intensity for attackers to return to defence. Off the bench, Dickie provided the Krew with opportunities; Mainland lifted the tempo of the team and Damo provided some much needed stability. The team rallied back with Pov firing in two goals and the momentum had swung in favour of the Krew only for things to fall apart akin to a certain New York - Denver game. Damo later lamented that, "we had it in the bag".

The opposition had consistently been physical throughout the game. When the Krew finally reciprocated the notion primarily through Mainland and Dylan, calls were made against legitimate shoulder to shoulder hussles. In a case of rubbing salt into the wounds, the opposition had consistently used high elbows when encountered and a few had connected on Mainland's chin. It was blatantly overlooked by the referee.

In a minute of madness: Pov was sent off for the same offence that Mainland was warned for. Dion was set off immediately afterwards for obscenities after he saved a shot which was taken unsportsmanly. Mainland entered goal and Dixon was the lone wolf on the field. There was a glimmer of hope when Mainland made a string of saves but the stand in keeper eventually chose to walk after two more goals were conceded.

The Krew crowded the referee after the game and it was reminscent of a certain Madison Square Garden incident. No punches were thrown. Mainland later admitted that he had considered clotheslining a player during the play when he was warned prior to Pov's send off.

The team was strongly against paying for the match fee but Noid had taken matters into his own hands and had paid without the team's consent. He claimed it was upholding a sportsmanship code. He was also against the team walking off. Con harshly reminded Noid that he was one of the main offenders during the game, having been sent off for unsportsman-like gestures.

Dixon was vocal in his disgust and said, "I'm not paying for this fucking shit". In a spur of the moment decision in classic Mainland fashion, Mainland quit the team because of the unsatisfactory services of the tournament. He returned in less than two minutes. Mainland said, "I'll only play if Ian the fucken idiot isn't ref-ing". A complaint was lodged with the tournament organisers but action will be unlikely.

Winning Ways Wows Wombles

vs Wombles

Noid returned in goal for the first time since the Krew's form slump early last season and his much needed presence in goal was one of the reasons for victory. Pov and Al each scored a double in a game that never looked over until the final goal.

It was a game against our former derby rivals, the Wombles. But for the past few seasons Krew's status as a 1st division title contester and the Wombles 2nd division status has made the game a formality.

On this occasion it was no formality. Despite solid defence from Con and Mainland at the back, the Krew's movement and passing was lethargic and liable to fast breaks. The Wombles never gave up and at one stage was 2-1 up even without its star, Clay.

The team has grew from a one star team since the derby days. Alv and Pov combined to steer home the victory with some vicious shooting. The Krew could have been more comfortable if Dyl, Main and Con got at least one of their many open opportunities.

The victory gives the team added confidence in its defence as it was able to incorporate Con into its shuffling defence. However, improvement can be made in off the ball movement and improved passing from its backs.

Reality Bites Impossible Dream (Ruud Awakening)

5-2 Loss to 'Leeds Utd'

The season ended early for the division 1 runners up when they lost 5-2 to Leeds Utd. Coming off a two game win streak, the Krew had hopes of making the semi finals but it turned out to be a rude awakening. Leeds will have the chance to take top honours as they finished in the top four. The Krew needed another 15 goal performance to mathematically in it. Fats made a guest appearance and showed flashes of brilliance.

Mainland started in goal, with Pov, Dylan, Noid and Con on the field. The Krew conceded two early goals to a combination of lax keeping and vulnerable defence. Pov was able to get two back but once Leeds scored the third goal the Krew never looked capable of winning. Mainland saved a penalty but was flat footed by the second.

The Krew will have two weeks break after a disastrous season where they have been short on players. The first insult came when Mainland was unavailable for five games, during that time Damo was lost to injury and Noid was unable to keep through a thumb injury. Nesa and Jimmy were both stray cats as it was difficult to determine when they would play.

On a more positive note, Con joined the team late into the middle of the season where he scored 5 goals in 9 games. Whilst, Mainland vastly improved his keeper skills to be able to deputise full time. It is hoped that when the next season starts, both Noid and Damo would be fit to play. The Krew are looking to replace Alvin's lost time with Dixon.

Tight Squeeze. Krew get 2nd in a row

The Krew were forced to do things the hard way again. Things went hay wire after losing a 3-0 lead in a matter of minutes to some sloppy defending. Dylan continued his magnificient form to fire in a double, Con registered on the scoresheet for his fifth of the season. But for the first time this season, Alvin's name was missing on the scoresheet. He was involved in the match winning play where he drew two defenders and provide the assist for Noid's crucial matchwinner. Damo said after the game that we 'played well but it was just those three goals...'

Alvin started in goal to preserve energy for his crucial weekend semi-final. Pov, Dylan, Noid and Korn started on the field with Mainland warming the bench. The krew scored instantly when Dylan found a gaping hole in the opponents' wall from his kick off shot. The goal was so quick that Mainland had his back to the game whilst still walking towards the bench.

Con and Dylan added two more for a comfortable lead. The Krew's defence was of the 'old style' where the zone defence was able to slide and shuffle to accomodate attacks. However, we looked vulnerable on 50-50 balls and on conceding rushed balls.

The first goal against came as Mainland was played 3-1 on a 'turnover'. The second came from a suspect penalty from Mainland's 'push' from behind. The opponents thought they've completed the come back with their 3rd goal as Pov was slow to get up after failing to control an alvin long throw, allowing a transition opportunity which the scrambling defense were unable to stop.

This time, a match fit Mainland entered goal to unleash Alvin to an unsuspecting defence in the final minutes. He instantly put Balls n All's defence on the backfoot. Finally drawing two defenders to allow an open Noid to score the winner. Balls n All nearly equalised again with a well struck shot, only to be saved by the rookie keeper, Mainland. Also, Noid continues to improve his football with better defence and positioning, while Mainland continues to skyrocket his keeping skills.

In other news:
The Krew stands to lose its MVP for the majority of the foreseeable future as Alvin has work commitments that restrict him to 9pm games. It comes as another blow to the already thin team that was once brimming with reserves. Dixon is being sought for his services post HSC (HST).

Mainland's hint (more intended for Noid's improving game):Take it easy when we're behind or in danger. The harder you push (or anyone for that matter) the more vulnerable the team gets. If the team is behind, save the 'all out' strategy until the last two or three minutes.

Biggest Victory in history!

The Krew seemed to be in for a difficult night as they had no substitutes available for the high intensity MCG. Instead, they finally stopped the 'bleeding' and got 3 bonus points for 15 goals. Dylan and Pov combined for a ten goal rampage, but Alvin and Mainland didn't miss out on the occasion as it became possibly the first time the whole team scored. The injured Damo was licking his lips for a piece of the action as he watched in disbelief. The defensive midfielder later said, 'I didn't know what was going on!'

The game started off with each team feeling each other's capabilities. Alvin started in goals and the plan was to play a solid defensive formation with two at the back and one at a more advanced position. It worked well to conserve energy. Dylan's impressive performance from the previous game was continued into this game as he organised the troops with good leadership.

The short dead-lock finally lifted as Pov and Dylan combined for 5 goals in the first half. The Krew never looked back and were never in doubt of losing the game. Mainland once again entered goal due to fitness problems.

With Al on the field, the CAC trio scored another 7 goals before Mainland returned for a piece of the action. There was a period of consecutive goals where the Krew scored each time they gained possession from the opposing kick-off. The Krew used simple triangle plays and frustrating techniques to open up space.

In a different scenario and possibly adding a new weapon to the Krew's modest arsenal of strategies, Alvin reserved himself to last man. This allowed the two attacking midfielders, Pov and Dyl, to receive deliveries from the back whilst Alvin drew the opposition into our half to open space.

The Krew's massive victory was slightly tainted by a flagrant foul from the opposition on Al. Ian (the stupid ref) failed to give a warning and defended the player because he knew him. Also, Pov failed to keep the clean sheet where the opposition's only goal was celebrated by then as if it was a victory.

Peking duck was used to celebrate the massive win.

offence:
-scoring not an issue
-never will be an issue

defence:
-Nesa should have played on hindsight to anchor the back
-need an anchor player with defence experience at the back
-the key to anchoring is to jockey (be on your toes and 'shuffle' along with the opposing player, commit only when you are sure 100% that he has lost the ball. don't let them trick you)
-hassling in the opposing half not only wastes energy but it puts yourself out of position making other players work twice as hard to cover the space opened up from the unsuccessful commitment. Its all well to do it once or twice to catch them unaware but if the opposition is quality there is no point whatsoever.
-the key to a good Krew defence is that everyone is there and we can play the trademark sliding-zone D, that draws the opposing team into our half and then we can counter quickly and efficiently with Al plus one. (plus 1.5 on the big field as that 0.5 plays a lingering support role in between the counter attack and anchor. (Damo epitomizes the perfect 0.5 player)
-essentially the defence formation should be close to a triangle

-wots worked in the past? if we show that we all defend and leave Al lingering at the half way line, even if we have minimal scoring opportunities we end up winning. why? because our defence has forced them to get out of position and allowed Al to pass the last man. Ilia has been his only challenge. Once the flood gates open, they become anxious and play catch up.. making our counter more and more effective. Other attacking opportunities involve running the play through Al.. but once again its the 1.5 players that do it and they must be prepared to defend at any point in time.

-when the opportunity arises at Con's park, I will answer any queries and provide learning opportunity to defend and play your position.

midfield:
-whilst the anchor player theoretically holds up the opposing attack, the midfielders need to slide back to help. On the small field, there is no out-and-out striker as all three players are required to defend on the narrow strip.
-its easy to get caught up in an attacking play, but if it happens too often you have to start asking yourself are you pushing too far up and not coming back quickly enough?

goalkeeping:
-a horrible display from 'Steve Harper!'.
-its also a case of Mr Watson's rule in some situations
-need to level up...

other points?:
-so why is Al allowed to linger at the half and not really defend? because its more effective to have him keeping the opposing team on their toes than waste him doing a defensive job that either one of us should be able to do. comments encouraged.

Mainland's return not enough to get results

There was high expectations on Mainland's return to the side from a month long hiatus especially with the team on a 4 game losing streak with many injury concerns. Noid reports to have broken his wrist wanking; Damo broke his wrist in a horrific fall; Dylan was unavailable because of personal commitments; and Jim is still recovering from a broken knee that lost to a fridge. That makes 6 of the possible 9 players unavailable with most playing out of position already. If the Krew are to avoid relegation its predicted it needs to win almost all of its remaining games.

Al started in goal with Pov, Noid and Mainland on field. The Krew quickly conceded 2 goals. The passing was horrible and the ball control wasn't the best. Korn arrived after the game started and Nesa arrived halfway into the match owing to a continueing management problem in the timetabling department for the team.

Mainland's lack of match fitness forced him to go in goals to allow for recovery and also to unleash a much needed boost from Al. He was able to score almost immediately and Mainland was producing uncharacteristic inspirational saves.

With a lack of experienced defenders on the field- Noid being a non factor in defence and Korn being new to the system, Al was forced to do things for himself when Pov subbed himself off twice. The defence continued to be exposed but Mainland produced save after save to keep the Krew in the game. Nesa also injected a much needed presence for the Krew's defence.

It was a case of too little too late as the krew extends its losing run to 5, its longest losing streak in its history. Al scored the equaliser before the opposition secured victory in the dying seconds of the game. The projected starting line up for the next game will feature Mainland as keeper who is known as a dudd in goal, but proved himself worthy to start from his latest performance.

10 goal thriller finishes all square

Thoroughly owned ,Federer v Bjorkman style. With energy conserved we were ready to do the royal rumble in the Grand Final, except Damo who got another strain of the avian flu.

The Omen Strikes

Alvin arrived 2 minutes late to see only 4 players on the field. Mainland was out due to exams but 2 other members' unavailability remains unknown. We played the whole game with only 5 players but due to great defending, Noid was almost untroubled for the whole game. Pov opened the scoring mid way through the first half from a typical 1-2 with Alvin in the middle and his right foot slot into the far corner made no mistake in beating their keeper. One of their players started trash talking and Dylan gave as good as he got. Damo found new tricks to create all sorts of troubles for their defense and he made full use of the nets to rebound to himself. First having rounded the ref, the ball came back to him with a defender closing in, using the net again to round the first defender, he continued his run down the line using the same move to beat the 2nd defender. The Omen then sealed the game for the win from an easy tap in from the edge of the box. Noido later expressed his feelings for not having enough to do in the game.

High Octane Performance

The Krew secured two bonus points by scoring 10 goals. With the use of quick one-two's and clever triangle play, four players were on the score sheet with Dylmah netting four and Povo having a hat trick. The Krew were missing Noido to a family affair and Jimmy to financial commitments.

The early stages of the game was a tight affair with Alvmah guarding the goals and Damo on the bench. Both teams were unable to penetrate into a shooting position. After three minutes, the Krew's defence was becoming more and more vulnerable as Mainland appeared more and more sluggish. Damo substituted in to stabilise the defence but the teams were still locked in a stalemate.

The weary looking Mainland returned to the field after a few minutes and the team's vulnerabilities were once again exposed because of his lack of pace and stamina. Alvmah was able to defend Mumet's chances well. Finally, Mainland switched positions with Alvmah, to become the new goal keeper.

Like an imprisoned dragon released, Alvmah gave the team an explosive edge and immediately scored the opener. Mumet Kunem returned the favour by scoring uncontested outside of the box. Trading goals, Dylmah scored easily to give Krew a short lived lead. Mumet's Chris then had a lucky bounce off the elastic wall to allow him to easily tap in an almost empty goal.

Mainland conceded one more goal which he could have saved with some more effort. The Krew changed to high octane fuel the rest of the way. The benign Nesa played a more advanced role and was unlucky to score from a ferociously connected volley in a play initiated by himself. The ball almost always touched the feet of every player for each goal.

It was a one sided affair as the Krew had trouble recalling who scored. Nesa was rewarded with a goal towards the end and Dylan scored the last two goals to earn 2 bonus points. Mainland redeemed himself as goalkeeper by organising the defensive line. Members commented on the game, "we've never scored 10 goals and we did it without Noid, that's so funny!". Krew continue their four game win streak and face Jenna's Boys next week.

Rallying late, Alvin and James snatch the win

The Krew were bolstered by last minute additions of Alvmah and Jimmy in what was expected to be a six man line up without the two stars. The opposition was one of the traditional derby games against "Chelsea", where the Krew have only been able to secure victory against them on one occasion over the numerous other meetings. On this occasion, the Krew's late additions won the game from 2-0 down.

The Krew needed to play their best in order to get a result and they did just that. The game started with Damo, Jimmy, Nesa and Povo on the field. Early on, the game was hussle and bustle with neither team gaining an advantage or able to have a clean cut shot. Substitutions began towards the middle of the half to provide maximum freshness to the players, only Povo remained on the field. It also appeared that Chelsea were using soft tactics to milk tackles whilst their #2 got away with high elbows.

Luck appeared to be on Chelsea's side as Povo was somehow nutmeg-ed by "Martinez" in a gang tackle involving Mainland. Having opened up some space, Martinez drew Alvmah away from his man, resulting in an uncontested goal. Povo's bad luck did not end there. A few minutes later, a wayward shot from Chelsea was partially intercepted by Pov and Noid could only watch the ball trickle into the corner as he failed to recover.

At this stage, the Krew did not give up and knew there was a tremendous hill to climb to get a result. Alvmah continued to run the ball and draw an extra defender. Whilst the deep bench allowed players to be fresh and provide runs for Alvmah to lay off, however no one was able to control their first touch well. Nevertheless, the Krew's defence was solid as every man tackled hard and the defence shifted to cover each gap that opened. Effectively shutting down Chelsea's star players.

The Krew's chance came on the break, winning the loose ball, the Krew players managed to find Alvmah with time to strike. He accepted the open space given to him by firing the Krew's first goal towards the end of the half.

The second half saw Chelsea's tempo decline as each Krew player made their presence felt. The team decided on the tactic to "run it hard" as quoted by the bench players, and without a bench Chelsea began to tire.

But things come in sets of three, and Povo's third unlucky call was when Chelsea won a penalty from what could have been an unneccessary tackle from behind. Noid saved Martinez's penalty in a complete turn around of last week's dismal performance.

Martinez continued to taunt with fruitless tricks, but Chelsea's players were holding back to defend their slim lead. The equaliser came late in the 2nd half. Mainland won a tackle from his half and drove down the line. One of the two defenders on Alvmah came to check Mainland, who passed it to Alvmah. Hearing a call from James running down the opposite wing, Alvmah completed the switch and James rocketed his trademark goal from left wing 45 degrees to see it go into the top right corner.

With less than 2 minutes left and Chelsea clearly not attacking with any conviction. Alvmah snatched victory when Mainland won a tackle and offloaded to Alvmah with space, he turned and rocketed it into the top near corner under pressure from closing defenders.

Keeper Blunders and no Penalty Wonders. James wins it.

New signing James Kim had an MVP game by scoring two goals to win the game in a tight contest. He was recruited in an effort to replace MVP, Alvin. The game was a high scoring affair where the winners should have won by a more comfortable margin. Ref. Peter said after the match, "it should've been 10-1".

Off the kick off, the Krew immediately made opportunities and Damo scrambled his first goal of the season. The lead was short lived as the opposition scored off the kick off. It was a stalemate for the next four or five minutes with as many as four penalties in our favour for that period. Povo the deputising general on the field in the absence of unavailable captain Alvin took it upon himself to score for the lead.

The Krew were only successful once from those four penalties thanks to Povo on his second attempt. James blasted one penalty over the top. The 2-1 lead was once again short lived as Ian's powerful shot went past Dion's gloves.

Despite the dominant possession and the lion's share of shots the team lacked some tempo. In the absence of Dylan's up tempo style, Mainland took it upon himself to raise the level of the Krew's game. After coming off the bench for a few minutes, Dion noticed an unmarked Mainland. A long throw, an excellent trap in, a shimmy and a fake, a sidestepped defender and a blocked shot! Luckily, the ball landed straight back to Mainland's feet where he proceeded to slot in an empty goal as the keeper failed to recover.

The Krew played significantly better in the second half as Mainland extended the lead from a baseline run where he blasted it into the roof from a narrow angle. The 2 goal lead was quickly reduced after another superb strike from the red hot Ian. In the next few plays, the Krew defence was stretched and in a moment of ball watching conceded another goal.

Ruing more missed penalties by Pov and Nesa. James rocketed the ball into the roof for a short lived lead. James capped off a strong all round performance to score an almost identical goal to the first and ensure victory for the Krew in the dying moments of the game.

Dion's return to full-time keeping was one to forget. Ex-captain, Alvin said after the game, "he kept better than this on his debut". Other teammates asked, "what happen?" and the brutally honest Mainland commented, "you played shithouse Noid". However, Noid was due for a bad performance and it was probably better to get it out of the way with a win.

Man of the Match: James; Honourable Mention: Ian.
